How Much Does A Tomato Weigh? (Tables In Grams & Ounces)

Knowing the weight of a single tomato is helpful if you are cooking or canning. However, the average size varies depending on the type of tomato and when it was harvested.

So, how much does a tomato weigh? The smallest tomatoes (cherry tomatoes) weigh only half an ounce (14 grams) to 2 ounces (57 grams). The largest tomatoes (beefsteak tomatoes) can weigh a pound (16 ounces or 455 grams) or more. Most medium tomatoes (the ones you find at a grocery store) weigh anywhere from 4 to 8 ounces.

Of course, the weight of a tomato depends on the variety: cherry, grape, plum, roma, or beefsteak. Tomato weight can vary from half an ounce (14 grams) for the smallest tomatoes all the way up to 4 pounds (1.8 kilograms) for the largest tomatoes.

The smaller tomato varieties (such as cherry, grape, and plum tomatoes) will usually weigh no more than 2 or 3 ounces (57 to 85 grams).

On the other hand, larger varieties (beefsteak tomatoes) will often weigh at least a pound (16 ounces or 455 grams).

To get a better idea of the weights of tomatoes, let’s look at some different varieties and how much they weigh on average.

How Much Does A Tomato Weigh?

The weight of a tomato depends on the variety of tomato.  There are cherry, plum, grape, roma, and beef tomatoes of various sizes.

The following tables shows different types of tomatoes, along with the average weight (in grams and ounces), the number of tomatoes per kilogram, and the number of tomatoes per pound.

More About Tomato Sizes (What Makes A Small Tomato or A Large Tomato?)

According to the USDA, the size of a tomato depends on its diameter.

Remember that cherry, plum, grape, and roma tomatoes are exempted from marking requirements as to size.

For more information, check out this information on tomato sizes from the USDA.

According to the USDA, these are the dimensions for various sizes of tomatoes:

Size Minimum

Note that “minimum diameter” means that the tomato will not pass through a round opening of the designated diameter when the tomato is placed with the greatest transverse diameter across the opening.

Note that “maximum diameter” means that the tomato will pass through a round opening of the designated diameter in any position.

How Much Does A Cherry Tomato Weigh?

A cherry tomato weighs between 0.5 and 2 ounces (14 to 57 grams), making them the smallest tomatoes available. Most cherry tomatoes weigh in at around 1 ounce (28 grams), with a diameter of about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters).

cherry tomatoes
Cherry tomatoes are some of the smallest tomatoes around, but you can get lots of them from one tomato plant!

Of course, the small size of cherry tomatoes is offset by the large amount of fruit that you can get from a single plant.  Some cherry tomato varieties can produce hundreds of little tomatoes in a single season!

Even better, indeterminate cherry tomato varieties will keep producing fruit throughout the growing season.

See the table below for cherry tomato weights in ounces and grams.

How Much Does A Plum Tomato Weigh?

A plum tomato weighs between 1 and 2 ounces (28 to 57 grams).  This makes them about the same size as cherry tomatoes.

Plum tomatoes are about the same size as grape tomatoes, but more oval-shaped.

The small size of plum tomatoes is offset by the large amount of fruit that you can get from a single plant.  Some plum tomato varieties can produce hundreds of little tomatoes in a single season!

Even better, indeterminate plum tomato varieties will keep producing fruit throughout the growing season.

How Much Does A Grape Tomato Weigh?

A grape tomato weighs between 1 and 3 ounces (14 to 57 grams).  This makes them about the same size or slightly larger than cherry tomatoes.
